I can't believe some people are upset that some people recorded and put out the Star Spangled Banner in Spanish. Being a nation of immigrants from many many countries, where originally the true natives spoke in hundreds of languages, and our national language is a fucked up version of true English, what right does any of us have to say that our national anthem can't be sung in a language other than English? Lets face it, English arguably isn't the most romantic, flowing, or beautiful language on the globe. So why can't people try and sing songs traditionaly sung in one language, in another? Pop stars record cuts of records all the time in several languages to appease the global marketplace. Perhaps if we had the national anthem in several different languages, we could appease all the parts of our great country. I mean hell, its "just" a song. I know that statement might frighten some of you. But I put up the argument for gay marriage as an argument for this as well. Just because someone else sings a song in another language, does that make it any less important to you when you sing it in its original language? No. Its a stupid idea that it would make it less important. Yes, our nation isn't a bilingual one. However, look at almost every other country in the world. They all learn multiple languages for the most part. Shouldn't we do the same to better our nation and make our people more understanding of other cultures? It really seems like we are taking steps backward in this country instead of forward.
One thing that I thought was really funny was that I heard George Bush said he thought the anthem should only be sung in English. The man can't even speak english well, and he hadn't even heard the song yet. If it was a well done song, I think it would make the anthem more special since imitation is the greatest form of flattery.
Ok, I know you all don't want to read anything that long, but I had to rant.
