When I went to see this movie the other weekend, I was prepared. I rented the original Amityville Horror (1979) the weekend before. The original was alright. A little lacking towards the end. This left a lot of room for the remake to make itself known, and it did. The new movie is (in my opinion) far better than the original. Its true that it uses the cliche sudden shock scare tactics that is typical for crappy remakes, however this one at least had an ending which you expected/wanted to see. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the main character George Lutz was actually played by Ryan Reynolds of Van Wilder fame.
The story wasn't as sparse this time around as they attempted to fill in the gaps with reasons for why things were happening the way they did unlike the first movie. This is a plus as well as a minus. Putting a face and name to the horror never makes a movie as scary, however it does keep the audience from becoming confused. They also seemed to borrow the idea that long haired little girls are scary (which they are) from certain recent horror movies.
Overall there were memorable moments such as a scare in a hot sexy moment, and a babysitter in a closet which make this movie worth seeing. While other people probably will think this movie sucks, I fancy myself a fan of the horror genre. Bottom line...
8.0 / 10
P.S. Any movie where the 20-something guy behind you says that his friends should all see a chick flick next time after almost crapping his pants must be a good scary movie.
