So I've started reading Ultimate-Guitar.com forums, and I noticed that they had a section specifically for "true punk and ska bands." I thought "hey I'll check this out." Seeing as how they had a separate section for "Pop Punk and Emo", I knew that there would be a lot of haters in the "true punk" forum. I can't understand why, but I'm drawn to reading things that are pretty much a waste of time. All I read in there was stuff of people arguing about how "punk" they were and the other guy was not. Some dude even claimed to be beating up nazis. I have no idea where these people live, but I'm pretty hard pressed to find nazi punks of any kind in California. What makes these things interesting is looking at how old some of the people are that actually post these things.
For example, someone actually took a step to defend Green Day and said that everyone liked them even if they say they didn't when Dookie came out. Some other stupid kid said that noone liked them, and that they sucked. Now when I look at the birthdate of this kid, he was born in 1989. So when dookie came out in 1993, he was 4. I find it especially hard to criticize any music and say that noone liked it when I was 4. I didn't really listen or pay attention to music until I was at least 10. Now I could however take a look back in time at billboard charts, etc... and see how well a band did selling records back in the day, see what bands they played with, and find old reviews out of "zines" and the like. This would lead me to develop an educated opinion about how much a band was liked by a specific group of people.
Now, Green Day was on Lookout Records playing what is arguably "punk enough" to be considered punk if the likes of the Buzzcocks are considered punk, in 1989. They did the Bay Area scene and played with many different types of bands, some good, some bad, and started it all in 1987. A couple years before this said kid was even born. Seeing as how their album Kerplunk sold 55,000 records, a huge deal for an independent release, and the Dookie album after that went multi-platinum, I'd say its safe to say that most people and even a good deal of "punk" people which went to all these rock shows in the bay area liked their sound.
I remember going to lots of shows in my high school days. Some notable bands that I saw back then are AFI, The Ataris, and Blink 182, all before they became mega-rock stars. And they played with some great bands. Back then, everyone liked them, nowadays... people seem to think that these bands aren't "punk enough".
Now if people could only backup what they say, then I would have more respect for the kids on these forums. I mean really, if people are just going to flame each other, they should just say "I hate your f*&^ing guts and that band sucks!" instead of saying statements that are untrue. Its quicker to the point, and sounds nice too.
Ok this was a really long post that really didn't have much to do with anything. Sorry guys.
