So I read the news just now for the first time in a while, and I was appalled. There was actually a vote in the senate to ban desecration of the U.S. flag. This is simply the stupidest thing I've ever heard of. Desecration of a flag symbolizes a discontent with that institution. So by banning desecration of our nations flag means we could not show our discontent with the government in that simple yet effective way. My point is that this could be the start of limiting freedom of speech, one of the values our country was founded on. Another point is that does any silly material posession actually hold a significance greater than what you in your mind can have? NO! If the Statue Of Liberty were to fall, it would be a big shock, and people would all say that it meant that freedom or liberty or something was declining or even abolished. But really, all that means is that the (pardon my french) bitch was too heavy to support itself, unless some terrorists blew it up. Either way, that only means that a pile of metal is now no longer in an artistic form. What is even more shocking than the idea of this legislation, is the fact it only failed by a SINGLE VOTE. This means there are that many people in the senate which think that by outlawing flag burning and the like, that we would be somehow protecting our freedoms instead of setting them back. I think people really need more education. Maybe I'm just misguided. But wouldn't it be silly to only have the U.S. flag desecration banned? This would make us seem like we were "better" than everyone else. Which I'm afraid to say, has been proven time and again that we are not.
