When I was in the early stages of my Punk Rock cultivation, I picked up an album from The Misfits entitled Collection II.
I remember not really liking this album that much. The only songs that I could stand were "Last Caress, "Halloween," and "Demonomania." I eventually traded in this album or something... well, I don't know where this album is anymore. I thought most of the songs were probably filler. And to this day, that may be the case. Especially after learning that some of the songs were not the full Misfit's, but part of Danzig's other band.
What confused me is that every Misfits song I heard after that I liked a lot. So some time ago I acquired Collection I which is probably a better compilation. And now, I finally acquired a copy of Collection II again.
This brings me to my point. I think a lot of the early 80s punk rock I didn't enjoy growing up was due to the poor production value of pretty much any respectable band. Recording's hissed, weren't EQ'd properly, and in general sounded empty unlike the fat sounding guitars used in most modern albums. I was raised on radio, so who can blame me?
However nowadays, I truly enjoy these great albums of the 80s. I thank my decent speaker setup and media player. By turning up the music to the proper loudness (which I can do now that I don't have to upset anyone else), I can experience the music as it was meant to be heard. The poorly recorded grittyness now sounds like a concert in my apartment.
Cheers to loud music!
