Movie Review : The Grudge

Lots of critics say that The Grudge seems like another Ring movie. They would be right. However, I believe it stands out in its own right. Despite similar objects and bad guys (hair, scary women, mirrors, etc...), The Grudge separates itself by having far more scary/jumpy moments. Probably 10 compared to 2 in The Ring. I must have heard over 15 different people screaming when I saw this in the theater opening night.

The movie can basically be categorized as a haunted house flick, but a lot freakier. These Japanese know how to scare people. By that I mean that the movie was actually directed by Takashi Shimizu who did the original movie in Japan. Sarah Michelle Gellar wasn't outstanding, but was up to par for the role. I had no problems seeing her as the heroine. What I was really happy about was the inclusion of Sam Raimi. He is a really underated funny man. Oh yeah, Bill Pullman is in it too which is great since he is a good actor.

Bottom line? The real test of a scary movie is "Did it make you lose sleep at night?" The answer is this, it made Jessica scared to get a drink of water in the middle of the night, and I was glad she slept over that night. So yes, it passes my test.

8.5 / 10

See if you can track down the original, "Ju-On". I screamed out loud in the theater. Honest to god I did. I screamed and whimpered like a little pansy girl multiple times. I think Lee downloaded it so you probly can too.
